Heritage Near Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle takes a day if you let it, and most people do not have one to spare. What is worth knowing is how much sits within a few minutes of the gate, because the town the castle stands in is older than most of the buildings in it and almost nobody who comes on a coach ever sees it.

Five minutes on foot: the Lord Leycester Hospital

A courtyard of leaning timber-framed buildings at the West Gate, parts of it standing since the 1300s, and still functioning as a home for ex-servicemen after more than four centuries. It survived the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694 that took most of the town centre. It is also the meeting point for the evening walking tour that goes round the old town.

Six minutes on foot: the Collegiate Church of St Mary

Worth the walk for one room. The Beauchamp Chapel holds the tomb of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, and it is among the finest pieces of fifteenth-century funerary work in England. The family that built the towers you climb is buried five minutes from them.

Five minutes on foot: Mill Street and Castle Bridge

The photograph everybody takes of Warwick Castle is not taken inside it. From Mill Street and from the bridge over the Avon you get the towers, the mill, the weir and the water in one frame, and none of it costs anything. Go at the end of the afternoon when the light is on the sandstone.

Fifteen minutes by car: Kenilworth Castle

The most useful comparison in Warwickshire, because the two are not competing. Warwick is a complete, roofed, furnished building run as an attraction. Kenilworth is a red-sandstone ruin run by English Heritage, with Elizabethan garden reconstructions and almost no theming at all. Visitors who find Warwick too staged usually find Kenilworth is what they actually wanted.

Twenty-five minutes by car: Stratford-upon-Avon

Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the school he attended and the church he is buried in, in a town small enough to walk. It is the second stop on every London coach day here, and one of the few pairings where the coach itinerary genuinely is the sensible route: eight miles of B-road between two places that both take about ninety minutes.

An hour by car: Blenheim Palace and Oxford

Both appear on the day trips rather than on a Warwick itinerary. Oxford is the third stop on the London coach days, usually with a walking tour of the colleges. Blenheim Palace — a World Heritage Site and Churchill’s birthplace — appears on one private car day alongside Warwick and Stratford, with entry to all three inside the fare.
